CAA stand for Certifying Acceptance Agent for facilitating the application for a ITIN number
IRS ITIN Program Mission
The mission of the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) Program is to facilitate participation in the tax system and to ensure that the ITIN applications are processed in a timely and efficient manner.
What is a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)?
A Certifying Acceptance Agent is an individual or an entity who is authorized by the IRS to assist alien individuals and other foreign persons in obtaining Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) from the IRS. A CAA can verify the original and certified copies of identifying documents from the issuing agency for primary and secondary ITIN applicants, except for foreign military identification card, and may now certify passports and birth certificates for dependents. A person acting in its capacity as a CAA does not
act as an agent of the IRS and is not authorized to hold itself out as an agent.
What is an ITIN?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a
tax processing number, issued by the Internal Revenue
Service, for certain resident and nonresident aliens, their
spouses, and their dependents. An ITIN is only available
to individuals who are required to have a taxpayer
identification number for tax purposes, but who do not
have, and are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security
Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration
(SSA). It is a nine-digit number beginning with the
number “9”, has a range of numbers from “50” to “65”,
“70” to “88”, “90” to “92” and “94” to “99” for the fourth
and fifth digits and is formatted like a SSN (i.e. XXXXX-XXXX).
ITINs are issued regardless of immigration
status because both resident and nonresident aliens
may have United States federal tax filing and payment
responsibilities under the Internal Revenue Code.
